How to Hang a Hammock Chair Indoors and How Much Weight Can the Joist Hold?

Bring the outdoors in by hanging a hammock chair from a joist, also called a stud or wood beam, in the ceiling of your house. If you install the hardware correctly, the joist can support an average-size adult. If you have concerns about the weight limits of the joist in your home, there are ways to reinforce it for safety. You can also distribute the weight across two studs with extra hardware.

Instructions

Find the ceiling joist, using a stud finder. Make sure to locate the center of the joist, which is the strongest spot. Mark it with a pencil. Drill a hole in the joist 5 inches deep at the center mark, using a wood drill bit. Screw the eye bolt into the hole, making sure all the threads disappear into the ceiling.

Tie an overhand knot through the S-hook that came with the chair. Use the two overhead ropes while maintaining equal rope length on both sides. Hang the chair from the large eye bolt with the large S-hook.

    • 3

Install the dowels into the dowel sockets. Make sure the dowels are firmly in place. The long dowel goes overhead, while the two equal-length dowels go on the sides above the armrests and the short dowels go in the footrest.

Pull the overhead knots tightly to secure them. This tests the strength of the knots and dowel holders. The overhead dowel must be parallel and level with the ground to avoid a lopsided chair.

Tie an overhand knot to the small S-hook provided for the footrest. With the small S-hook, hang the footrest into the eye bolt or large S-hook on the ceiling. Adjust the footrest up or down as you prefer.
