How to Keep Wood Chairs From Scratching Floors

Aside from forbidding everyone from ever sliding chairs on your floors--which is nearly impossible in homes with children or chairs that are used around a table--you're going to have to come up with another solution. You can prevent your wood chairs from scratching your floors, so you and your family will have the freedom to move the chairs around as you please.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut small pieces of carpet remnants to fit under each chair leg. Glue them on with a heavy-duty wood glue or an all-purpose glue with the soft carpeted side facing down.

    • 2

Use peel-and-stick felt pads designed to go on the bottom of furniture to prevent the legs from scratching the floors. You may have to cut the pads to fit the bottom of the chair legs. Cut to fit before peeling the stickers.

    • 3

Cut a small X in a tennis ball, using a utility knifel. The X should be slightly smaller than the chair leg so it doesn't easily come off. Slip one tennis ball on each chair leg to protect the flooring.

    • 4

Place each chair leg on a furniture coaster with the felt side down. This works best for the chairs you don't often move around, as the legs sometimes slip off the coasters--especially if someone lifts up the chair and moves it.

    • 5

Sweep and clean the floors often. Sand, dirt and grit under chair legs can scratch the floors as you move around the chairs. Brush off any debris or sand on the bottom of the legs, as necessary
