Types of Chairs: Roller Chairs vs. Chairs With Four Stationary Legs

Chairs on rollers, or casters, are not just for offices. A variety of chairs designed with casters are available for use in any room of your home. However, mobility is only one of many factors that you should consider when deciding whether a chair should have casters or not. Your choice of casters or stationary legs should depend on conditions in your particular space and the needs of your household.
  1. Construction of Chairs with Casters

    • A caster weakens a wood leg into which it is inserted. The legs of even the best-built hardwood chair of any style have an increased chance of cracking when the manufacturer adds casters. If a chair will receive heavy use and mobility is not essential, select a chair without casters. Some traditional living room chairs can be found with all four legs on casters, while some have decorative casters on the front legs only.

    General Safety and Practicality

    • In some situations, chairs with casters are easier to use than those with stationary legs. In addition to pulling up at a desk, casters allow ease of movement up to a vanity or work table. But keep in mind children or elderly household members who may try occasionally to cling to a chair for support. If the chair moves, injury may result. Also consider any delicate rugs or wood floors that may be damaged by frequent rolling from casters.

    Use at a Dining Table

    • One of the most practical applications of chairs on casters is in the dining room or other eating area. Chairs on casters allow ease of movement forward and backward from the table. Because of this, more chairs often can be placed closer together at the table. Allow two or more feet of space behind each chair and do not place breakables close behind them. Dining chairs are available in skirted styles that hide the casters.

    Use in a Family Room

    • In a family room, chairs on casters allow reconfiguration of seating for separate conversation, reading or entertainment areas on short notice. Guests and family members can arrange and angle chairs themselves for convenient television viewing or if they wish to move their chairs to another area of the room. Game table sets are often available with chairs on casters, which add to the fun and relaxed atmosphere. But for heavy use, game chairs with stationary legs will likely be more durable.
