How to Repair Cracked Chrome Metal Table Legs

Metal chair legs are not constructed from solid chrome. Instead, they are layered with chromium to create a shiny coating on a more durable metal. After several years of wear and tear, the delicate chrome might crack or chip. Repairing a chrome crack is a multi-step process that involves repairing the imperfection and restoring the chrome’s appearance and shine. This can be accomplished without the need for specialized tools or equipment.

  • Soapy water
  • Microfiber cloths

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the affected area with soapy water. Use a microfiber cloth to remove any dirt, grime or dust from the chrome without scratching the fragile finish.

    • 2

Sand down the area of the crack with 320-grit sandpaper. Continue to rub the sandpaper over the crack until it is flush with the surrounding area.

    • 3

Apply a thin layer of liquid steel over the affected area with a small paintbrush. Continue to apply thin layers of the liquid steel until the area is flush with the surrounding chrome surface.

    • 4

Allow the liquid steel to dry completely. Tape off the affected area with painter’s tape and apply spray-on chrome paint using even, back-and-forth motions.

    • 5

Allow the first layer to dry completely before applying a second layer, if necessary. Allow this second layer to dry completely before continuing.

    • 6

Apply a thin layer of chrome polish to the newly painted area with a microfiber cloth. Work the polish into the chrome using overlapping circles. Allow the chrome polish to haze before buffing it with a clean microfiber cloth.
