How to Make Stools More Comfy

A stool is a type of chair that has no back or arms. The circular seat often is made from wood or metal and supported on a frame. The seat typically is topped with a foam pad and upholstered in fabric or leather. The pad must be changed when it becomes worn and compressed. Certain stools have no built-in pad but can be covered with a loose cushion to make them more comfortable.

Instructions

  1. Replacing a Foam Pad

    • 1

Turn the stool upside down, and examine the underside of the seat. You should be able to see the nail heads that attach the foam to the seat. Remove these nails with the claw end of a hammer. If the nails aren't visible, remove the fabric covering first.

    • 2

Cut the fabric away with a craft knife until you can see the nails. Unless you're very careful, it's unlikely that you'll be able to reuse this piece of fabric, so take the opportunity to reupholster the stool as well. Remove the nails.

    • 3

Place the old foam pad on top of the new sheet of foam, and draw round it. Cut the shape out.

    • 4

Place the new foam pad on top of the stool, and secure it in place with upholstery tacks, if the seat is wooden, or glue.

    • 5

Lay the new fabric right-side down on the floor. Place the stool on top, upside down, so that the seat is in the center of the fabric. Cut off the excess fabric, and fold the hem tightly under the seat, securing it in place with staples or upholstery tacks.

    Making a Loose Pad

    • 6

Place the stool upside down on a piece of paper. Draw round the shape of the stool, and cut out the template. Use the template and a craft knife to cut out a new foam cushion.

    • 7

Lay the fabric on the floor, right-side down, and put the foam pad on top. Fold the fabric tightly round the pad, stapling it into place.

    • 8

Cut two or three pieces of hook and loop fastener, and place the hook side on the stool and the loop side on the underside of the cushion. Press the cushion into place.
