How to Change the Color of an Upholstered Chair

Old, ugly chairs often still have a lot of life in them, despite their outdated look. You can give these chairs a new life by changing their color. Use upholstery paint to color chairs. Upholstery paint adheres to any material that will absorb water and is permanent once it is dried. It also dries so it is soft to the touch so your guests will never know your chair has been painted. Use a paint color that is darker than the upholstery for the best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Test a small piece of upholstery before you begin painting. If you turn the chair over, you will find inconspicuous pieces of upholstery stapled to the bottom of the chair. Spray a small area and wait 72 hours. Check to see if you like the color and if you like how the paint is adhering to the upholstery.

    • 2

Set the chair in a well-ventilated area. If the weather is nice, take it outside and set it on a tarp or flattened cardboard boxes. Work inside if the weather isn't cooperating but be sure to carefully cover all the surrounding area so spray paint doesn't get on your other furnishings, walls or floors. You may want to set the chair in the garage so it is out of the way while the paint is drying.

    • 3

Remove the cushions from the chair and set them aside. You'll paint them separately from the rest of the chair.

    • 4

Tape any pieces of the chair that you don't want painted with painter's tape. This includes wood trim and legs. If the legs unscrew you can remove them to avoid painting them.

    • 5

Shake the bottle of spray paint and spray the upholstery surface using a smooth, slow, even motion. Do not stop while you are spraying or the upholstery will get a heavier coating in that area. Continue spraying until all the chair is covered, then do the cushion.

Allow the paint to dry for 72 hours. Each coat of paint will take 72 hours to dry. Apply a second coat. If you are painting over dark upholstery, you may need to apply a third coat. Let the paint dry completely before using the chair.
