How to Fix Your Squeaky Recliner

Recliner chairs can develop squeaking noises over time, which usually occurs when the reclining function is activated. These squeaks are usually caused by fixtures on the underside of the chair that require lubrication or tightening to prevent the noise from reoccurring.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in the recliner chair. Reach down to your side and pull up the recliner lever so the chair falls back. Some recliner chairs have a button around the armrest that activates the reclining function instead.

    • 2

Get out of the chair, leaving it in a reclined position. Lift the chair up and turn it over so you can see its underside. Leaving the chair in the reclined position will allow you to access the fittings that may be causing the chair to squeak and creak.

    • 3

Remove any covering on the underside of the recliner chair. Covers may be detachable by hand, but some may require that screws or nails be removed by using a screwdriver or the claw side of a hammer. Once the cover is removed, the fixtures should be visible.

    • 4

Grip any nuts or bolts with a spanner and tighten them by turning in a clockwise direction. Loose nuts and bolts can cause unpleasant creaking or rattling noises on recliner chairs.

    • 5

Apply a metal lubricant to the springs, coils and hinges on the underside of the recliner. Metal lubricants protect metal fixtures from rust and corrosion, which can weaken the fittings and lead to squeaking. Spray the lubricant on the nuts and bolts too.

    • 6

Reposition the recliner chair in an upright position. Sit in the chair and flip the lever so it goes back to its usual upright position. Flip the lever again to see if there is any squeaking noise. Apply more lubricant to the fixtures and retighten the nuts and bolts if problems persist.
