How to Restore an Eames Chair With Holes

The iconic lines and shape of the Eames lounger makes it a necessity for any mid-century modern lover’s home. The dark plywood frame accents the richness of the black leather seat. As of 2011, Herman Miller offered a newer version of the chair with a retail price of over $5,000, and the original models sell for around the same. Restoring holes in the leather chair involves the same process as restoring any type of leather. Removing the damage goes a long way towards increasing the chair’s value.

Instructions

    • 1

Dust the surface of the chair with a soft cloth, removing any dust or debris from the leather. Clean the leather with a specialty leather cleaner. Apply the cleaner to the leather with a soft cloth and rub in small circles. Wipe off any excess cleaner with a new cloth.

    • 2

Repair holes in the seams of the chair by gently pulling apart the seam and exposing the inside of the chair. Apply super glue to one side and press the other side of the seam against the glue. Keep your seam pinched closed with your hands for at least 10 seconds.

    • 3

Gently roll the bottle of color match product between your hands, mixing the ingredients. The color match product repairs minor holes that wear through the leather from normal usage. Carefully dab the liquid on the worn-through holes and wait until it dries.

    • 4

Remove the leather patch from the leather repair kit and cut into a size appropriate for your hole. Cover the hole with the adhesive that comes in the kit, applying an even coat to the damaged spot. Press the patch over the adhesive and rub smooth with your hands. Once the adhesive sets, gently peel away the patch. Repeat the process on any other holes in the chair.

Wipe down the entire seat of the Eames chair with leather conditioner. The conditioner restores the natural texture and feel of the leather. Gently buff the chair with a soft cloth, removing any excess conditioner and restoring the chair’s shine.
