How to Fix a Coil Spring in a Chair

Older antique chairs are those most commonly associated with coil springs. While these chairs are hard to find in stores, they can be often be found at garage sales or flea markets. The spring coils located in the bottom of the chairs give the chair support and stability. Over time, one of the coils may become damaged and need to be fixed. The best way to fix the coil is to remove it entirely.

Turn the chair over so it is upside-down. Locate the tacks or staples holding the fabric in place on the seat of the chair and begin prying them off with a flat-head screwdriver. Slide the screwdriver between the staples and the chair. Pull up carefully and remove the staples from the chair to loosen the fabric up.

Pull off the seat cushion. Take off the fabric and remove the stuffing underneath the fabric. Set it aside for future use. Take out the padding and find the top of the chair springs located inside the seat cushion.

    • 3

Inspect the springs and determine which ones need replacing. The amount of chair springs will vary depending on what type of chair you have and how big it is. Check for wear and damage to the springs. Remove the damaged springs by hand.

    • 4

Match up the springs with springs that are the same size so they will fit properly into the chair. Set the new springs down in the same spots where the old ones were removed. Push them down firmly so they lock into place in the exact same spot as before.

Place the padding and stuffing back down in place. Set the fabric back on over the chair and staple it to the bottom with staples and a staple gun. Set the chair cushion back on the chair and test it out to make sure the springs are working properly.
