Tip the chair forward so that it rests upside down on the tip of its arms and the top of the backrest.
Locate the two adjustable wing nuts or thumb wheels on either side of the chair. These are situated under the seat, either toward the back of the chair or closer to the middle, depending on the model.
Increase or decrease the reclining tension by turning both thumb wheels or wing nuts by equal amounts, no more than a quarter turn at a time. Increase the tension by turning them clockwise, and decrease the tension by turning them counterclockwise.
Lift the chair to the upright position, and test the reclining action after each adjustment. Repeat steps 1 through 3 until the push-back and handle tension suit your particular needs.
