How to Fix Cat Tears in the Arm of the Chair

Cats make great companions in the home. But, cats that are not declawed can cause damage to furniture and other objects in the home. Cats naturally scratch objects to sharpen their claws and prepare for play. It is not uncommon for cat’s claws to tear the fabric of arm chairs. Arm chairs with small cat tears can be fixed with patience and proper materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off any frayed edges of the chair fabric damaged by the cat.

    • 2

Apply fabric glue, or fray check, over the edges of the tear.

    • 3

Choose thread that matches the chair fabric and thread it through a needle. Make sure to tie a small knot at the end of the thread.

    • 4

Fold the edges of the tear inward and sew the folds so they will not come undone.

    • 5

Sew the folded edges together. Using a running stitch will be the most transparent. Fasten the thread about 1/4-inch from the start of the tear and make small stitches by passing the needle in and out of the fabric in a straight line.

    • 6

Cut away any remaining thread after fully closing the tear.
