How to Repair an Old Rocking Chair That Is Dried and Split by Filling It With Putty

Old wood chairs have likely had a hard life -- especially rocking chairs. Changing weather causes wood to swell, heavy weight causes stress on joints, and the movement of the chair may cause splits to appear. It's hard to get rid of a chair, especially when it has been in the family for years. Splits and cracks don't need to be the end of the chair's life. Wood putty, which flexes with the wood, can be used to fill cracks and make the wood strong enough for another lifetime of use.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray a scrap piece of wood with a spray lubricant.

    • 2

Attach the scrap piece of wood to the broken area using a clamp. The board supports the wood as the putty dries.

    • 3

Mix together the wood putty resin according to the instruction in the packaging. The two-part wood putty hardens only when the two parts are mixed together.

    • 4

Apply the putty to the wood with a putty knife. Fill any gaps, trying to make the putty as flush to the surface of the wood as possible.

    • 5

Cut the wood filler flush to the wood using a utility knife once the putty has dried for the recommended amount of time.

    • 6

      Remove the wood board support.

    • 7

Shape the wood putty using a piece of sandpaper.
