How to Repaint a Vintage Metal Rocking Chair

A vintage metal rocking chair adds a touch of old-world charm to any room. Whether you rock your child to sleep in the chair or watch the day go by from one on your front porch, you want a chair in good condition. When metal meets water or other forms of moisture, corrosion happens and leaves behind rusty spots. Before you paint your chair, you must remove those rusty areas. Any rust left behind will ruin the look of the new paint job.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply an even coat of paint stripper to all areas of the rocking chair. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines regarding how long to let the product sit. Wipe an old rag across the chair, pulling off the old paint from the metal.

    • 2

Sand the chair with fine-grit sandpaper, focusing on any paint still left on the chair. For decorated areas, scrub the surfaces with a wire brush. The brush will pull off the excess paint, leaving behind the original metal finish.

    • 3

Pour paint stripper on an old rag, and rub the stripper into any engraved or molded areas. Dab a second rag against the areas, and remove the extra liquid. Pour mineral spirits on a rag, and wipe down all areas of the metal chair with the mineral spirits.

Coat the rocking chair with a thin layer of metal primer. The primer will form a protective coat on the metal and keep rust from settling into the metal. Use a spray primer or apply the primer with a paintbrush, and let the primer dry several hours.

Paint the rocking chair with metal paint. CBS News recommends the Rust Tough paint from Krylon, which has chemicals that further prevent rusting. Use an enamel paint that gives the metal a slightly shiny surface, similar to the look of natural metal.
