How to Cover an Ugly Chair

Give that ugly chair a second chance with a few supplies and a couple of hours. Bringing new life to an old chair is not a difficult or expensive task. Rather than purchasing new chairs, cover an ugly chair with fabric. This project requires no special skills and is a cost-effective way to transform a chair and an entire room. Change chair covers often to keep a fresh look in your home.

Measuring tape

Instructions

  Place the end of a measuring tape in front of one of the front legs of the chair. Stretch the measuring tape up the leg, across the seat, up the chair back, down the chair back, and to the back of the back leg on the same side. Write this measurement down, it will be the length of the main piece of fabric for the chair cover.

  Measure the width of the chair. This will be the width of the fabric for the main fabric piece.

  Cut the main fabric piece according to the measurements taken in the first two steps. Drape the fabric over the chair. Adjust the fabric until it covers all but the sides of the chair. The ends of the fabric should be touching the ground in the front and back of the chair.

  Make a second measurement for the second piece of fabric for the chair cover. Place the end of the measuring tape on the side of one of the front legs of the chair. Reach the tape up the leg, across the seat, and down the other front leg. Write this measurement down, it is the length of the second fabric piece.

  Measure the depth of the chair. This is the measurement for the width of the second piece of fabric.

  Cut the second piece of fabric according to measurements taken in the previous two steps. Drape this piece of fabric across the chair seat, so the ends of the fabric touch the ground on the sides of the chair.

  Cut a long length of wide ribbon. Loop the ribbon around the back of the chair And tie a large bow. This will hold the main fabric in place.
