How to Measure for Reupholstering Wingback Chairs

Reupholstering chairs yourself allows you to update their design and give them new life, without the additional cost of paying a professional. Before you purchase fabric from the store, take accurate measurements of the chair you want to recover so you do not buy too much, or too little. Measuring reupholstery fabric for a wingback chair may seem daunting, taking its numerous parts into consideration. However, simplify the task by carefully measuring each section at a time, along with seam allowances, and recording the findings.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a simple diagram of the wingback chair so you label the parts and the yards of fabric needs for each. Draw the chair as accurately as possible and include every upholstered section, no matter how small.

    • 2

Place the tip of the measuring tape over the top of the inner back of the wingback chair and extend it vertically down to its lower edge. Note this length measurement on the diagram, plus 2 inches for seam allowance. Calculate the width of the inner back of the chair, plus 2 inches, and record it.

    • 3

Measure the length of the left wing of the chair, or the part where your shoulder rests. Add 2 inches for seams before recording the measurement. Also measure the width of this wing, at its widest point -- usually the top -- plus 2 inches for seams and record it.

    • 4

Measure the length and width of the back of the wingback chair, or its outer back, along the widest and longest parts. Include 2 inches to each measurement for seam allowances and record.

    • 5

Extend the tape measure over the base of the seat, or the deck, where the cushion sits, and calculate its length and width. Before recording the measurements, Add 2 inches to the measurements for seams.

    • 6

Measure the width and length of the nose -- the lower front of the chair, or the section under the cushion where your legs touch. Add 2 inches for seams and record.

    • 7

Measure the length of the inner arm of the chair, or the section between the inside seat and arm front. Extend the measuring tape from the seam over the arm to the deck or place where the cushion sits. Add 2 inches to each measurement and record.

    • 8

Measure the length and width of each outer side of the chair, plus 2 inches, and record. Also, measure the length and width of each front arm panel, plus 2 inches for seams.

    • 9

Measure the width and length of the seat cushion, plus 2 inches for seams. You need two identical pieces of fabric for the cushion top and bottom. Also, measure the depth of the cushion, plus 2 inches, and cut four pieces of fabric to this measurement.

    • 10

Add the recorded measurements and divide the result by 1,296 to calculate the total yardage of the fabric you need. The total number of inches in a square yard is 1,296.
