How to Get a Desk Chair to Lower

Modern desk chairs and office chairs come with a great many levers and features to adjust all sorts of things about the chair. You can adjust the angle of the seat back, add lumbar support or even adjust the height of the chair. Adjusting the height of a desk chair is done by filling or removing air from a gas cylinder located in the leg support. The air trapped in the cylinder holds the chair up at varying heights, depending on your preferences.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in the chair and ascertain whether the height of the chair is ideal for you. There will be some personal preference involved, but the correct ergonomic position for sitting is generally thought to be with your feet flat on the floor, or on a foot rest if you are especially short.

    • 2

Reach under the chair with either hand. There should be either a lever or a button. If you cannot find it with your hands, get out of the chair and find it.

    • 3

Pull up on the lever or press the button while sitting in the chair to jettison air from the gas cylinder. This should cause the chair to sink. Allow it to sink until your feet are flat on the floor.

    • 4

Get off the chair and press the button or pull up on the lever if the chair goes too far down. This will allow air to re-enter the gas cylinder, causing the chair to rise. You can then try lowering the chair again to your ideal height.

Some chairs raise and lower as they spin. The chair is on a threaded leg. If you spin the chair in one direction, the chair will adjust higher. If you spin it in the opposite direction, the chair will lower.
