How to Add Firmness Under Chairs

Upholstered chairs sag due to broken springs, misuse or weight from normal sitting in time. Sagging chairs look sloppy and unattractive, and are often uncomfortable. You can restore a chair’s firmness with inexpensive commercial products or simple repairs.

Things You'll Need

  • Seam ripper
  • Loose polyfill
  • Upholstery needle and thread
  • ½-inch plywood sheet or commercial seat savers
  • Handsaw

Instructions

    • 1

Unzip the chair’s cushion revealing the stuffing inside. If the cushion doesn’t have a zipper, use a seam ripper and tear open a few inches of the seam.

    • 2

Supplement or replace the cushion’s existing stuffing with loose polyfill until the chair achieves the desired firmness level. Polyfill is preferable to foam stuffing due to its flame-retardant properties.

    • 3

Stitch up the cushion, using an upholstery needle and thread.

    • 4

Cut a piece of one-half inch plywood with a hand saw to fit the chair’s seat. Place the plywood underneath the seat cushion for added firmness. Placing a commercial plastic seat saver underneath the cushion is another option.
