How to Darken a Wicker Chair

Sometimes a piece of furniture needs a face-lift. Wicker furniture -- such as rattan, raffia, buri or willow -- can enhance an outdoor lounge area, an enclosed porch or an interior room. However, wicker furniture can suffer an early demise due to lack of care, according to the New York Times. Wicker pieces may need a protective refurbishing, which can result in a refreshingly darker finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Darken and protect a wicker chair by brushing on a thin coat of one part boiled linseed oil and one to two parts turpentine. Apply the linseed mixture to a clean, dry, unpainted wicker chair, wiping off excess with a cloth.

    • 2

Sand away flaking paint and rough surfaces with 220-grit sandpaper if you want to darken a wicker chair through repainting. Then, spray the chair with a dark-colored spray paint, such as an interior-exterior spray paint. Allow the chair to dry, which takes about an hour, and spray one or more additional coats of paint until achieving the desired darker color.

Seal the surfaces of a wicker chair from humid, damp environments by applying a penetrating waterproofing sealer, which can also darken the chair. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to spray or wipe on the sealer, wiping away excess.
