What Is a Tub Bucket Chair?

Oftentimes, when walking into a living room, hotel room or lobby or community center, you will find some version of the tub bucket chair. A cozy, if confining, style of chair, tub bucket chairs have a long history with roots in the Art Deco movement and come in a plethora of styles enabling them to complement a wide variety of residential and commercial spaces.
  1. Tub Bucket Chair Description and History

    • A tub bucket chair is defined as an easy chair that features an unusually low back. The arms of the chair are either the same height as the chair back or slope downward, and a curve is formed regardless of the height of the chair arms. The chair's history dates back to the 19th century with influences in the Art Deco movement. Furniture designer and architect Josef Hoffman, who taught at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts for more than 30 years, was one of the first designers of this chair, and he credits Art Deco designs as part of his inspiration. His famous Koller Chair of 1911 is considered an "exaggerated form" of the modern tub chair.

    Types of Tub Bucket Chairs

    • Types of tub bucket chairs include upholstered chairs with plush cushions and backing in various colors, patterns and designs, though chairs that feature plush cushioning with a leather exterior are also available. Upholstered versions that feature more apparent, "claw" legs as well as plastic swivel bucket chairs are options, with the latter often featured in restaurant and home bars. Stackable plastic bucket chairs, which are frequently used in community centers and schools, are another type of tub bucket chair.

    Decorating with Tub Bucket Chairs

    • Tub bucket chairs frequently come as part of a living room set, such as two chairs to a sofa. The chairs can be used to flank the sofa in a symmetrical fashion, although the chairs can also be used individually as a plush corner chair for the bedroom, den or basement rec room. Utilize plastic versions in a child's play room at a craft table, as plastic generally allows for easy cleanups when spills and messes are made. Plastic versions also can be used as additional seating for a basement rec room when necessary.

    Accessories for Tub Bucket Chairs

    • As with other upholstered furniture, plush versions of bucket chairs can feature fabric slipcovers, whether homemade or commercial. Slip covers work well for disguising stained but otherwise viable furniture and as protection against children's and pet's messy hands and paws. Use small pillows as additional accessories for tub bucket chairs, including upholstered and plastic versions.
