How to Fix the Fabric on a Chair

The frame is what gives a chair durability and structure, but it is the fabric that catches your eye. Decor savvy people on a budget can repair small rips in upholstery with little problem. For areas with a large amount of damage, replacing the material may be the best option, but for a small tear, sewing it up will work. Fixing the fabric will spruce up a piece that looks as if it is headed for the garbage.

Instructions

  Apply a fabric stiffener to the both side of fabric on the open area. This will help prevent fraying as you sew. You should follow the directions on the product for proper application.

  Fold the fabric under to create a new edge. The stiffener keeps the folded fabric in place. If the fabric has excess fraying, you may need to fold in over more to get a clean edge. Otherwise, only turn the fabrics over about 1/8th of an inch.

  Thread a curved upholstery needle with nylon thread that matches the fabric.

  Press the folded edges together with your fingers to close the rip. Insert the needle on the underside of the tear. For example, if stitching the seam, the underside would be facing the chair.

  Pull the needle up through the two edges of the fabric and out the opposite side. In other words, the needle comes out the side facing the ceiling. Continue stitching along the length of the tear and then cut off the thread. Tie the closing knot as close to the fabric as possible.
