How to Adjust the Handle on a La-Z-Boy Reclining Chair

The handle on the side of a La-Z-Boy recliner controls the leg rest. When the handle is moved counterclockwise, the leg rest will rise up in one of three positions. You might want to adjust the handle if you find the mechanism too stiff or too loose to manipulate while you are seated in the chair. Tall or heavier people usually require a higher tension level in the mechanism than smaller people.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the leg rest and tip the chair forward until the top of the seat back and the arms are resting on the floor.

    • 2

Locate the wing nuts beneath the seat cushion springs on either side of the chair. Each nut is attached to a tension spring. If you have a Reclina-Glider Swivel Recliner, there will be thumb wheels instead of wing nuts.

    • 3

Twist the wing nuts by hand in quarter-turn increments to increase or reduce the tension in the mechanism. Turn the nut clockwise to increase the tension; to reduce it, turn the nut counterclockwise.

    • 4

Set the chair back up. Sit in the chair and move the handle. Repeat Step 3 to make further adjustments until you are satisfied with the results.
