Locate the floor joists in the ceiling using a stud finder. Remove any ceiling paneling to access the true ceiling if necessary. Mark the edges of each joist in the area above the bed. Drill a hole in a ceiling joist directly above each corner of the bed.
Insert a 1-inch eye hook into each joist hole. Tighten the eye hooks by hand as much as possible. Insert the blade of a screwdriver through the eye of the eye hook and continue tightening until the rounded portion of the eye hook just begins to touch the ceiling. Repeat this process for all four corners. Make sure the eye hooks are all facing the same final direction for a uniform appearance.
Open four connecting carabiners that are 1 inch in diameter. Attach them to the four ceiling eye hooks. Add a length of chain to each carabiner and close the carabiner by screwing it down tightly.
Drill into the top of each corner of the bed, choosing the sturdiest location in each corner. Drill in the same place on all four corners to ensure the bed hangs evenly. Insert an eye hook into each hole and attach to the bed following the same procedure.
Attach a 1-inch carabiner to each eye hook. Lift the bed with the help of an assistant. Slide the end of each hanging chain over the open carabiner. Twist the carabiner closed and repeat for all four corners.
Set the carpenter's level on the bed and adjust the bed chains until the bed is level. Adjust each chain necessary by opening the carabiner. Remove the chain and attach the next higher or lower link of the chain to the carabiner. Repeat until the bed is evenly hung.
