How to Modify a Trundle Bed's Drawers to Fit a Mattress

Certain beds, such as daybeds, are high enough off the ground to provide clearance for either another mattress in a frame, called a trundle, or a set of drawers for extra storage. If you already have a trundle that you’ve been using for extra storage and you want to convert it to a mattress trundle, you may be able to. The key is to determine if the trundle in its current state is large and sturdy enough to fit a mattress. If not, you’ll need to rebuild the trundle to hold a mattress.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the trundle drawers from under your bed and measure the length. If the trundle is at least 77 inches long, then it can fit a twin mattress.

    • 2

Turn the trundle over and verify whether the drawers are part of a solid frame or are separate pieces. If there is one solid piece of wood on the bottom, then you can covert the trundle drawers into a mattress holder.

    • 3

Turn the trundle back over and study how the drawer separators are installed. Most of the time the drawer dividers are simply held in place with either wood glue or staples.

    • 4

Pull out the staples holding the drawers in place with a crowbar or knock the drawers loose with a hammer if they are only held in place with wood glue.

    • 5

Replace the front drawers with a 1-by-8 foot wood plank. Screw the wood into place with two wood screws on both sides.

    • 6

Position the handles 1 foot in on both sides of the front of the trundle. Mark the screw holes with a pencil.

    • 7

Drill pilot holes, and then place the handles back in position. Screw into place with wood screws.

    • 8

Turn the trundle over and check how many wheels there are. If there is no wheel in the center, purchase an extra caster wheel from the store. Place the wheel on the center and drill it into place with the included small wood screws. The extra caster wheel will prevent the trundle from bowing in the center.

Add the new mattress and slip it under the bed.
