How to Make a Bed With Maximum Storage Underneath

Building a bed may seem out of the average do-it-yourselfer’s league: complex joinery and woodworking, lots of drilling, sanding and effort. Add a storage bed and the thought of drawers or shelves just makes it all too complex. Or does it? Think outside the box, and you can make your own platform style bed with maximum storage underneath in under an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Storage cubby towers, approximately 20-by-20-by-75 inches, 2
  • Carpenter’s glue
  • 1-inch MDF sheet, 40-by-75 inches
  • Drill
  • 1-1/2-inch screws

Instructions

    • 1

Apply carpenter’s glue to the backs of two storage cubby towers, with the approximate dimensions of 20-by-20-by-75 inches for a twin-sized storage bed.

    • 2

Lay the two towers on their sides, back to back, and press them together so the glued backs have full contact with each other. Let glue dry. This allows access to the storage cubbies from both sides of the bed.

    • 3

Center a sheet of 1-inch-thick MDF measuring 40-by-75 inches over the top of the two storage towers for the platform of the storage bed.

    • 4

Secure the platform to the cubby towers with 1-1/2-inch screws driven every 8 to 10 inches around the perimeter of the platform, and on 8- to 10-inch centers across the MDF platform. Your simple platform storage bed is now complete.
