The Advantages of an Upholstered Bed

An upholstered bed can consist of an upholstered bed frame, headboard or both. The frame is often covered with leather for a classical look, but it can be covered with other materials of your preference. Using an upholstered bed in your bedroom provides many advantages over other beds, including comfort, price and the ability to customize the bed according to your budget and style.
  1. Comfort

    • One main advantage of an upholstered bed is its comfort. If you have an upholstered headboard, you can sit up in bed with a soft cushion behind your head. This creates the optimal material to use during nighttime reading. With a traditional headboard, you have to stack pillows a certain way to get the same comfort level since the headboard is too hard for you to rest your head comfortably.

    Price

    • Upholstered headboards are priced comparably to other headboards, but, unlike other types of headboards, you can make your own upholstered headboard and upholstered frame with minimal effort and investment. Making your own upholstered frame and headboard can cost hundreds of dollars less than buying a pre-made bed from a furniture store. The materials for a DIY upholstered headboard consist primarily of batting, fabric, plywood and a staple gun. Batting and fabric can help cover the frame of a platform style bed. Use a jigsaw to cut the plywood in the desired shape and then cover with batting and fabric.

    Safety

    • Upholstered beds are soft and provide additional safety. If you are sharing the bedroom with an infant, your bed frame and headboard will not pose a hazard as other types of beds will. Late-night departures from the bedroom will not be met with an inadvertent stubbing of your toes on the hard frame of the bed.

    Fabric

    • Upholstered beds give you the opportunity to customize the look of your bed. If you go shopping for a traditional bed, you typically have a few choices of wood or metal to choose from and no other options. However, upholstered beds give you many more options. Bed manufacturers give you the option of what type of fabric to use, such as leather, velvet or linen. You can also choose the color of your preference from a variety of samples.

    Accessories

    • Using an upholstered bed allows you to add accessories to it to create a custom look. You can add tufting to create a high end look to your headboard. Nailheads can add trimming to the headboard, footboard and frame. Other types of trim or ribbon can be added to the bed to make it coordinate with the colors in your room.
