Lay out two 60-inch log sections with 4-inch diameters parallel to each other and about 3 feet apart. Place a 40-inch log section with 3-inch diameter on top of and perpendicular to the longer sections, positioning it 1 foot from the top of the 60-inch sections, which are the bedposts.
Drill through the 40-inch log section, which should be considered a short support, and through each bedpost. Pass an 8-inch bolt through the logs with a washer on either side and tighten a nut on the other side. Repeat to add another short support, 2 feet from the other end of the bedposts.
Repeat the previous steps to create another system of two bedposts and two short supports. Consider these two systems the headboard and the footboard.
Stand the headboard and footboard upright, parallel to each other and with the short support boards facing each other. Position an 80-inch log section with a 3-inch diameter across the short support boards in the outside crook of the bedpost and the short support. Position four of these sections across the headboard and footboard to be the long support boards of the bunks.
Drill holes through the long support board and into the bedposts. Attach the long support boards to the bedpost with 8-inch bolts.
Cut six 40-inch logs with 2-inch diameters in half lengthwise with a table saw. Position six of the log halves evenly spaced on top of each pair of long supports with the flat surface facing down. Drill through each of these boards, which are the mattress supports, and into each long support board. Set the mattresses on top of these boards.
