How to Assemble a Murphy Bed Frame

If you’re moving to a new location or simply looking to change out the furniture in your room, you will have to disassemble your Murphy bed. Typically, this project is much easier than actually assembling the bed in the first place, and can typically be accomplished in less than an hour. If you plan to use the bed elsewhere or sell it, work slowly to ensure you do not damage any of the pieces or lose any of the hardware.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill with various bits

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the pieces from the packaging and lay them out in order according to the manufacturer directions. Review the product inventory list that came with your Murphy bed and ensure that you have all of the necessary hardware, pieces and tools for your specific bed.

    • 2

Attach the two side panels to the main piece using the provided hardware and a drill with a screwdriver bit or the clips provided by the manufacturer. Do not over-tighten the screws; check that everything lines up first by partially screwing in the panels and then tighten everything up.

    • 3

Prop up the front end of the bed with a cement block or other similar object. Install the pistons at the front end of the bed on either side. Although this will vary by manufacturer, you will typically have to attach the smallest end of the piston to the front of the bed and the thicker end to the attachment point towards the center, installing one piston on either side of the bed.

    • 4

Screw the headboard into place using the hardware provided by the manufacturer. As these screws are typically short, use a screwdriver or allen wrench instead of a drill with a screwdriver bit to avoid over-tightening or stripping the screws.

    • 5

Install the top piece of the Murphy bed, which will act as the foot board when the bed is down and the top of the unit when it is up, to the side panels. Lift the bed up and move it against the wall, ensuring that it is flush with the wall and in the location you want to install it.

    • 6

Use a stud finder to locate three studs behind the Murphy bed and mark these locations with a pencil. Place a masonry bit on your drill, using the size recommended by the manufacturer, and drill through the top piece of the Murphy bed directly into the studs. Depending on the size and style of your bed, you may need more than three studs, depending on the manufacturer of the bed.

    • 7

Secure the bed to the wall using the holes you drilled with the screws provided by the manufacturer. Test the bed by attempting to move it from the wall, rocking and otherwise pushing it around to ensure it is secure.

    • 8

Open the Murphy bed, pulling out the legs, and have two people hold the bed down. Place a mattress in the bed.
