Place a 41-by-30-by-3/4-inch plywood on your work surface. Use as much of the plywood as possible to draw a shape that reflects your child’s bedroom theme using a pencil. For example, if your daughter has a fairy garden bedroom, create a butterfly or flower. Or, if your son wants a pirate room, draw a pirate ship or leave it as a rectangle to create the Jolly Roger.
Cut out the drawn shape using a jigsaw and rotary tool to create a headboard. Once cut, sand the edges with medium-grit sandpaper.
Paint the cutout using acrylic paints or flat, latex paints. Let the paint dry overnight. Spray the surface of the painted plywood with an acrylic sealant to protect it from wear and tear. Let the sealant dry overnight.
Lift the headboard up to the wall where you want to mount it, with the bottom edge 25 inches above the ground. Use a nail gun to attach the headboard to the wall. Place the nails 2 inches in from the edges of the headboard, spaced every 6 inches.
Fill the nail holes with nail hole filler according to package directions. Paint over the surface of the nail holes with more paint. Let the paint dry for two to three hours. Spray the surface of the dried paint with more acrylic sealant. Let the sealant dry for two to three hours.
Place a metal twin bed frame in front of the hung. Place the box spring and mattress on top of the bed frame.
