How to Build a King Size Pedestal Bed With Drawers

King size beds take up a large amount of space in any bedroom, but in rooms where space is at a premium, they often can prevent other much-needed furniture from being placed in the same room. This can make storing clothes, bedding and other items difficult because a chest of drawers will not always fit. You can build a king size pedestal bed with drawers in it and remove the need for a separate chest of drawers, making space worries a thing of the past.

Instructions

  1. Building the Pedestal

    • 1

Measure and cut one sheet of 3/4-inch thick plywood to 76 inches long by 24 inches wide using a tape measure and circular saw. Cut one sheet of 3/4-inch thick plywood to 76 inches long by 21 inches wide. Cut two sheets of 3/4-inch thick plywood to 80 inches long by 17 inches wide. Cut one sheet of 3/4-inch thick plywood to 78-1/2 inches long and 17 inches wide.

    • 2

Measure and cut two sheets of 3/4-inch thick plywood to 37 inches long and 17 inches wide. Cut two sheets of 3/4-inch thick plywood 76 inches long and 27 inches wide. Cut one sheet of 3/4-inch thick plywood 76 inches long and 26 inches wide. Cut four lengths of two-by-fours to 39 inches long. Cut four lengths of two-by-fours to 37 inches long.

    • 3

Measure two inches along one 80 inch side of one 80-by-17 inch piece, then measure 4 inches up. From this point, draw a rectangle 35 inches long and 10 inches high using a pencil and ruler. Measure 6 inches along from the rectangle and draw another 10 by 35 inch rectangle. Repeat this process on the other 80-by-17 inch plywood sheet.

    • 4

Affix the 1 inch drill bit to the hammer drill. Drill a hole in each corner of the four rectangles you have drawn. Cut out the rectangles from the plywood sheets using a hacksaw. Sand down the edges of the rectangular holes in the plywood sheets using low grit sandpaper to remove any rough patches.

    • 5

Screw the 76-by-24 inch plywood sheet to one end of an 80-by-17 inch plywood sheet using two L-brackets and the hammer drill with a screwdriver drill bit, so the pieces stand at right angles to one-another. Screw the 76-by-21 inch sheet and to the other 80-by-17 inch sheet using two L-brackets so they are at right angles to one another.

    • 6

Screw these two L-shaped pieces to one another with two L-brackets per joint to form a bed frame. Screw the 78-1/2 inch by 17 inch plywood sheet in place down the middle of the bed frame using two L-brackets per joint. Screw a 37-by-17 inch plywood sheet in the middle of the bed frame on either side of the 78-1/2 inch sheet, using two L-brackets per joint.

    • 7

Screw the 39 inch long pieces into the bed frame, using one L-bracket per joint, between the frame and the 37 inch sheets crossing the frame through the center. The two-by-fours must be connected so they are flush with the top of the 17 inch tall side panels. Screw the 37 inch two-by-fours into the bottom of the bed frame between the frame and the 78-1/2 inch center panel using one L-bracket per joint.

    • 8

Screw one 27 inch wide plywood sheet across the top of the bed frame so one 76 inch long edge is flush with the 24 inch tall headboard. Screw the other 27 inch wide plywood sheet across the top of the bed frame so one 76 inch long edge is flush with the 21 inch tall footer. Screw the 26 inch wide plywood to the top of the bed frame sheet between the other sheets.

    Building the drawers

    • 9

Cut one 1/2 inch thick plywood sheet 36 inches long by 11 inches wide using the circular saw. Cut one 1/2 inch thick plywood sheet 35 inches long by 10 inches wide. Cut two 1/2 inch thick plywood sheets 30 inches long by 9-1/2 inches wide. Cut one 1/2 inch thick plywood sheet 30 inches long by 35 inches wide.

    • 10

Screw one 30-by-9 1/2 inch sheet to a 30 inch long edge of the 30 by 35 inch sheet so the sheet are at right angles to one-another with the 9-1/2 inch wide sheet standing on top of the 30 by 35 inch sheet. Screw the other 30-by-9 1/2 inch sheet to the opposite edge of the 30 by 35 inch sheet. You should now have a “U” shape.

    • 11

Screw the 35-by-10 inch sheet to one open face of the “U” shape to form a drawer with no front panel. Screw the 11-by-36 inch plywood sheet to the front of the drawer so there is a 1/2 inch lip around the drawer. Screw a drawer handle to the center of the front of the 11-by-36 inch sheet. Repeat this process three more times to make the the other drawers.
