Raising the Height of a Headboard

People change the height of their headboards after getting a new mattress, a change in bedding decor, to enhance its profile and for medical reasons. Those who raise heights of headboards for medical reasons might be inclining the bed to alleviate their symptoms. Hence, they also need to raise the headboard to maintain its profile or aesthetics. Whatever the case, it is always best to have a second person help you with the headboard to ensure that it's level.

Instructions

  1. Attaching to a Bed Frame

    • 1

Remove the mattress and box spring from the bed. Place the mattress and box spring on the floor upright on either side of the bed because that makes it easier to place them back on the bed when you've adjusted the height of your headboard. Pull the bed frame away from the wall so you can locate the screws or flush mounts. Unscrew the flush mounts or screws on each side of the headboard with a screwdriver. Use pliers or your fingers to unscrew the mounts if your headboard has wing nuts.

    • 2

Disconnect the headboard from the bed frame. Check the bottom of the headboard to determine whether you have holes or slits available for adjusting the height of your headboard.

    • 3

Place the box spring and mattress back on the bed frame. Make the bed as you normally would with sheets, a comforter and decorative pillows. Align the head of the bed with the wall while still providing enough space between the wall and head of the bed to determine the desired height of your headboard.

    • 4

Place the headboard legs on books or two similar objects that support the added weight. Check to see whether the headboard is at the height you want it. Stand at the foot of the bed and observe it. Add books or use thinner ones to find the ideal height. Use a pencil to mark the height of the bottom part of the headboard.

    • 5

Remove the box spring and mattress again. Re-attach the headboard to the bed frame so the bottom section is even with the pencil mark on the wall. Secure the screws or flush mounts to the headboard and bed frame. Tighten the bolts to the headboard to both sides. Use a level on the bed frame to ensure that it's level or the box spring and mattress won't fit back in securely.

    Mounting to a Wall

    • 6

Select a location for the headboard with the bed fully made. Check the profile of the headboard from several different angles as someone holds it up. Ensure that it's at the correct height. Mark the wall under the bottom of the headboard, according to experts at Apartment Therapy.

    • 7

Center your four-hole wall brackets so they fit securely with the slots on the back of the headboard. Mark four spots on the wall where to secure the wall mounts. Trace the holes with a pencil to mark your drill spots.

    • 8

Drill 16 holes in the wall. Connect the four-wall brackets with 16 anchors and screws because the anchors will provide extra support if you don't have a wall stud to connect to. Slip the headboard slots into place over the wall brackets. Use a level to ensure the headboard is straight.
