How to Arrange an Adult's Bed and a Child's Bed in a Small Room

In small spaces, finding alternative ways to arrange a bedroom for your child to share the space with with you is sometimes necessary. This is particularly true if you are in a rental unit or if you are sharing a house with someone. You can share a bedroom with your child and still have some privacy by arranging the furniture so that you each have your own area. Plan ahead and choose furniture that suits your living conditions for the best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a full-sized adult bed that has a trundle bed underneath it for the child. Pull the trundle bed out at night when the child is using it and slide it back underneath so you can use the space during the day.

Opt for bunk beds that have a double or queen-sized bed on the bottom and a twin bed on top. These beds use the vertical space in a room, allowing you to fit more people into a small room without using more floor space.

Set the beds side by side in the room. If you need more privacy, you can put a folding screen between the beds during the night and fold it up during the day. You can also press the beds together to create a large family bed, which is handy if a mother is breastfeeding a baby. For a simple side-by-side arrangement, place a small nightstand between the two beds and set a lamp on top to make sharing the room more casual.

Install a Murphy bed in the room. The bed will fold up into the wall when not in use but will also fold down for a comfortable bed in which to sleep. They come in multiple sizes so you can find one that fits area the in which you need to install it. Place a second bed in a permanent location where it won't interfere with the Murphy bed.

Use a pull-out couch, futon or daybed as one of the beds. This provides extra seating in the room and takes up less space than larger beds. Set the couch where it will have room to unfold or push a daybed up against one wall.

Convert a closet into a mini-bedroom within the main bedroom if it is large enough. Remove the doors so the child doesn't feel trapped, then make the space as welcoming as possible using paint, lighting and other decor elements. Slide a toddler or twin-sized bed into the closet, depending on how big the size of the child and closet. You can also use a wide foam mattress on the floor that fits the space as long as the child is comfortable.

Use a loft bed for the child's bed and slide an adult bed underneath. You can fit either a twin or double bed under most loft beds if the head of the bed fits under the loft frame with the foot end sticking out.
