How to Take Apart Slatted Beds

Slatted beds are a form of bed with a series of slats on the bottom of the frame. These slats serve as the support for the mattress and hold the bed up. In some cases the slats replace the need for a box spring entirely. Like many frames for beds, slatted beds are often made up of multiple pieces that are held together by nails or screws. If you need to move the bed you may need to take it apart to fit it through doors.

Instructions

    • 1

Take off the sheets, pillows and any other mattress pads or covers. Remove the mattress and box spring.

    • 2

Lift out the slats one by one from the frame. Note that some slatted beds have nailed or screwed-in slats.

    • 3

Unscrew any holding screws keeping the slats in place, using a screwdriver. If the slats are nailed to the frame, use claw of a hammer to carefully pry them out. Lift out the slats.

    • 4

Remove the screws in each of the four corners of the inside of the bed frame, using a screwdriver. Depending on the design of the frame, the screws may be on the inside edges or on the underside of the frame pieces. Remove the headboard and foot board if applicable by removing any screws holding the boards to the frame.

    • 5

Lift each side of the bed frame away from the rest of the bed. Some designs may have each side interlocked into the end of the next side, so you may need to slide or lift each side separately.
