What Is a Toddler Bed?

A toddler bed is a small bed that uses a crib mattress and serves as a transition for toddlers from a crib to a regular bed. Toddler beds stand about 1 foot from the ground, allowing a toddler to climb in and out of the bed independently. Most toddler beds come with safety rails. You can choose from very simple designs to expensive designer models.
  1. Age and Weight Limitations

    • Toddler beds accommodate a child up to 50 lbs., with an age limit of 5 years. By age 5, most children are too tall to fit in a toddler bed and prefer the independence of a "big" bed. Move young children to a toddler bed when they have outgrown the crib or are trying to climb over the crib rails, which could result in injury.

    Choosing a Toddler Bed

    • Toddler beds come in simple styles or expensive designer models. Before shelling out a lot of money, though, keep in mind that most children use a toddler bed for two years or less. Look for a sturdy bed with no sharp edges and guardrails on both sides. If you buy a used model, avoid any beds with chipping paint. Set the toddler bed with the headboard against the wall so the child doesn't become trapped between the bed and the wall. If you prefer, buy a twin bed and set the mattress directly on the ground. Add side rails for safety.

    Mattresses

    • If the crib mattress you already have is in good shape, by all means, use it. Toddler beds are made to fit a standard crib mattress. Make sure the mattress fits securely so the toddler doesn't get wedged between the rails and the mattress. Crib mattresses may be either foam or innerspring. Foam is less expensive and provides good support for a young child. The denser the foam, the better. Look for a mattress cover made with reinforced seams. Most crib mattresses are covered with vinyl, although newer mattresses may have organic cotton or wool covers.

    Making the Transition

    • Toddlers love the security of a crib or a parent's bed. Don't rush the transition to a toddler bed. When the child seems ready, set the toddler bed near the crib and add familiar blankets and stuffed animals. Young children often begin night wandering once they are in a toddler bed. Be prepared to sit with your child briefly to help him settle in before bedtime. If the child gets up in the middle of the night, help him back to bed and comfort him but avoid engaging in conversation, which will awaken him further.
