Differences Between a Twin-Size Bed & a Full-Size Bed

Twin-size beds and full-size beds are two common bed sizes used primarily for children's rooms. These two bed types are very similar; however, a full-size bed is slightly larger than a twin-size bed. Both bed sizes are ideal for small rooms and for sleeping a single person.
  1. Size

    • Twin and full-size beds are both 75 inches long; however, a twin-size bed is only 39 inches wide, while a full-size bed is 54 inches wide. This 15-inch difference in width is often used as a determining factor regarding what size bed to buy. A twin-size bed comfortably sleeps one child or one adult, while a full-size bed can accommodate two children comfortably or two adults, if need be.

    Benefits of Twin Beds

    • Twin-size beds are generally less expensive than full-size beds. The mattresses and sheets for a twin-size bed are smaller, easier to find and therefore less expensive. Many different types of beds, including trundles and daybeds, come in twin size. If you own a twin-size mattress, it is very versatile, allowing a homeowner to use the mattress in many different circumstances.

    Benefits of Full Beds

    • By paying a little more money, on average, a full-size bed, also called a double bed, can accommodate more people. If you have two children and their room is not large enough to house two twin-size beds, you may choose to purchase one full-size bed to sleep both of them. This will take up far less space than having two twin-size beds and it is cheaper to purchase one bed than two. Another benefit of a full-size bed is that many queen-size sheets fit on these beds.

    Details

    • Many furniture stores are selling extra-long twin beds, which are 5 inches longer than the standard twin or full-size bed. The disadvantage of these beds is finding sheets to fit them, which may be difficult and more expensive. To sleep a lot of children in one room, many people purchase a bunk bed that contains a full-size bed on the bottom and a twin-size bed on the top. This option potentially uses less space to sleep more people than any of the other options.
