How to Remove a Footboard

There are only a few aesthetic pieces on beds, chief among them are the headboard and footboard. Footboards, while not part of the assembly structure, are merely a decorative piece that provides a certain look for the overall decor. If you don't have enough legroom or are moving the bed to another area of the room, and the footboard is hampering your comfort or is no longer needed, you can remove it.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all bedding from the frame, including the blanket or comforter, sheets and pillows. Take off the mattress and foundation or box spring.

    • 2

Locate the mounting bolts securing the footboard to the frame. Loosen but don't remove them, or the footboard is likely to shift under its own weight, possibly pinching your fingers or striking you.

    • 3

Have someone steady the footboard as you unfasten and remove each mounting bolt. Pull the footboard away from the bed and set aside. If the mounting bolts serve the dual purpose of securing the end of the frame as well as the footboard, reconnect them and tighten.

    • 4

Place the foundation or box spring back onto the frame, then lay the mattress on top. Replace the sheets, pillows and blanket or comforter.
