Futons are padded mattresses used for added padding, sleeping or seating. Futons are made of flexible material that can be rolled or bent. Mattress covers add to the aesthetics when using the futon as a seating area or bed. Futons have a lifespan ranging around seven years of normal use.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the overall use of the futon. Decide if it will be used as a permanent bed, day bed, or play pad.

    • 2

Set up the futon mattress either on the frame or on the floor. The mattress on the frame allows the futon to double as additional seating for a room. The mattress on the floor provides a way to easily unfold itself into a bed.

    • 3

Choose the room for the futon. If the futon goes into a bedroom, it can be the main bed or an added sleeping and seating area. If the futon is for overnight guests it can be placed in a suitable location on the living room floor or alongside another permanent bed.

    Floor Futon

    • 4

Measure the length and width of the futon mattress. This helps determine if you have room to set the futon on the floor. Measure the floor space. This helps determine the positioning of the mattress.

    • 5

Set the futon on the floor with the roll side down. Untie the futon. Unroll the futon.

    • 6

Position the futon on the floor while it is unrolled.

    • 7

Roll up the futon when needed. Tie it up to keep it rolled. Place it back into storage.

    Play Area

    • 8

Set the futon on the floor in a baby or toddler play area.

    • 9

Place the child on the futon with their toys. The futon provides a comfortable soft area for the child to play without the risk of falling.

    • 10

Roll up the futon when the child is finished playing. Store the futon.

    Futon Bed/Seating

    • 11

Locate the position the futon frame will take in the room. Assemble the frame according to manufacturer's directions.

    • 12

Set up the mattress on the frame with the frame in the extended position. This ensures you have enough room around the futon while it is a bed.

    • 13

Adjust the frame to the seated position. Lift the front side of the futon frame to a 45 degree angle. Push on the frame using the side you lifted. This moves the back side. Continue pushing the frame until the futon is in the seating position.

    • 14

Extend the frame to the unfolded position to use it as a bed.
