How to Replace the Upper Foam Edge on a Soft-Sided Waterbed

The frame of a soft-sided waterbed is made of stiff foam rather than wood and hidden beneath a mattress cover. While waterbeds are usable for several years more than regular mattresses, the foam frame of a soft-sided waterbed eventually breaks down due to stress. Fortunately, each piece of the outer frame can be replaced independently. The procedure doesn't require draining the mattress bladders.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unzip the mattress cover completely.

    • 2

Remove all of the mattress bladders and carefully place them on a clean floor or in a bathtub.

    • 3

Remove both side foam edges and the upper foam edge from inside the mattress liner.

    • 4

Place the new upper foam edge inside the liner and push it against the upper edge of the liner, then replace the side edges.

    • 5

Return the mattress bladders to the cavity created by the foam frame. Straighten each bladder within the cavity, then zip the mattress liner back onto the frame.
