How to Assemble a King-Size Waterbed With Hard Sides

A king-size waterbed frame includes four finished exterior boards, three sheets of plywood decking and a pedestal frame. Some frames feature a headboard or a pedestal with drawers, but the procedure varies little with regard to these optional elements. Correct setup is essential for the best quality of sleep. If the frame is not placed in the center of the pedestal, the water can shift to one side and make for an uncomfortable sleeping surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the exterior frame boards on the floor where the bed will be set up. If your frame includes a headboard, the side rails will be a bit longer than normal to provide a resting place for the headboard. Look at both ends of the long boards and locate the screw holes. Face the screw holes toward the interior of the frame.

    • 2

Attach the corner brackets to the four corners of the bed frame, using the Phillips screwdriver and screws or--depending on what's in the kit--slide the edges into the metal corner bracket notches. Position the frame in the exact location where the bed will ultimately rest. Do not put the headboard on top of the frame (if applicable).

    • 3

Arrange the pedestal base inside the bed frame with the finished sides of the wood facing out. Attach corner brackets to the four corners of the pedestal frame. Slide the interlocking pieces of plywood together to create "+" shapes and arrange them inside the pedestal frame, spaced evenly apart. If the frame includes drawers, place them inside the exterior frame and slide the spacer boards between the drawer faces. When all spacers are placed between the drawers, the pedestal is assembled. This type of base does not require corner brackets.

Center the pedestal inside the frame and measure the distance between the two frames on all sides for accuracy. Gently lift the exterior frame off the floor. Prop it up against a wall or place it in an area out of the way.

    • 5

Lay the three decking boards across the surface of the pedestal, with the thinnest sheet placed between the two larger sheets. Place the cut corners of the plywood in the outer corners at the head of the bed. When you install the heating pads, the cut corners will provide a space for the cords to run through. Center the decking on top of the pedestal and measure each side for accuracy.

Pick up the exterior frame and place it on top of the decking. The bottom edges of the frame feature notches that will fit perfectly over the edges of the decking. Secure the top of the decking to the interior of the frame with corner brackets and a Phillips screwdriver and screws.

Place the headboard on top of the two long frame boards and secure it to the frame with straight brackets and a Phillips screwdriver and screws. Proceed with the mattress installation.
