Dimensions of Doubles, Queens & Kings

All bed sizes are not created equal. You might think that beds come in four different sizes---twin, full, queen and king---but there is a much wider range. Beds now come in additional sizes that use terms such as dual, plus, and California. Each has different dimensions that you'll need to know if you're going mattress or linen shopping.
  1. Full and Queen Mattresses

    • A full-sized bed is designed for two people, but may be more comfortable for just one.

Full and queen mattresses are each designed to hold two people. A standard full mattress is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. An extra-long full mattress has the same width but is 80 inches long. It can also be referred to as a double bed, but should not be confused with a twin-sized mattress, which is 39 inches wide and 75 inches long. The standard queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. It is sometimes sold as a dual queen, which has two mattresses that are each 30 inches wide and 80 inches long. A queen-plus mattress is the same length but 6 inches wider than the standard queen, with a width of 66 inches.

    King Mattresses

    • A dual king consists of two twin mattresses put together to make one king.

A variety of different king mattresses are available. A standard or Eastern king mattress is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. A dual king or king split has similar dimensions, except it consists of two mattresses that are 39 inches wide and 80 inches long. A California king is narrower and longer than the standard king. Its dimensions are 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. It can also be split into two mattresses, each 36 inches wide, to make the dual California king. A Wyoming king is the same length as the California king, but is wider at 84 inches. The largest king is the Alaska king, which usually comes in three pieces. It's 108 inches wide and long.

    Mattress Depth

    • If your mattress is deeper than the standard, it may be difficult to find sheets that fit.

Bed dimensions do not take into account a mattress's depth, which can vary quite a bit. A standard mattress has a depth between 7 to 9 inches. A deep or pillow-top mattress can have a depth between 10 to 18 inches. Extra deep mattress may have a depth as great as 22 inches. If you're uncertain of your mattress's depth, measure it at the center of each side and the center of one end.

    Bed Linen

    • Bed linen--such as comforters, sheets, blankets and pillow cases--vary depending on the vendor. Usually, comforters, duvets and blankets are sold in a full/queen size designed to fit both mattresses. These will vary between 86 to 90 inches wide and 88 to 98 inches long. King-sized comforters, duvets and blankets are between 104 to 110 inches wide and 88 to 98 inches long. Pillows come in more uniform sizes. Standard pillows are 20 inches by 26 inches. A queen-sized pillow is 20 by 30 inches. A king-sized pillow is 20 by 36 inches.
