Difference Between a Queen & a Queen Split Mattress

For two people who share a bed, a queen-size bed offers more room than a full. However, a queen-size bed has limitations, especially in smaller homes with stairwells and narrow hallways. As an alternative, the split-queen bed offers the same sleeping space as a queen; however, the components are smaller and easier to maneuver.
  1. Box Spring

    • Traditional beds made in the United States include three parts: a mattress, which rests on a box spring, which is cradled in a steel frame. A box spring is a firm foundation that's made of wood and springs covered in quilted fabric. Because of its rigidity, the box spring provides support to the mattress. In queen-size beds, the box spring is one solid platform. In split-queen beds, the box spring is cut in half. For homes with stairwells, sharp corners and narrow hallways, the narrower boxspring is easier to maneuver between rooms and floors.

    Dimensions

    • A standard queen-size bed measures 60 inches by 80 inches. In a split-queen bed, the total sleeping area is the same; however, the bed is split into two mattresses and boxsprings, which measure 30 inches by 80 inches.

    Frame

    • In a queen-size bed, the boxspring is cradled in a steel frame with wheels. The frame keeps the boxspring off the floor and reduces wear and tear caused by movement on the bed and potential friction with the floor. Frames sized for queen-size beds generally have a single cross bar which supports the boxspring. In a split-queen bed, at least one cross bar with a central support is required to support two split boxsprings. Depending upon the weight of the sleepers, more than one central support may be needed.

    Cost

    • Split-queen beds are not standard. Though sleep centers might have one or two on display, most retailers special order split queen beds. The cost varies but can run between $50 and $200 more than a traditional queen. The cost can be more for if both the mattress and foundation or boxspring are split.

    Advantages

    • On a split queen, each sleeper's movement is restricted to the individual mattress and boxspring. For individuals who move a lot in their sleep, a split mattress can ensure a more comfortable sleep for another person sharing the bed. Split queens offer options of optional settings. Adjustable beds and sleep number beds work because of split mattress design. Each person sleeping can adjust the height, angle and softness of his individual bed. In a traditional queen-size bed, one setting controls the entire bed. Finally, boxsprings on a split-queen bed tend to wear better. More metal and wood in the frame makes the bed stronger.
