DIY Wood Bed

Stores sell mass produced beds in limited designs which makes it challenging to find a wood bed that meets your design needs. Making your own wood bed frame is a low-cost alternative that will allow you to personalize your bedroom. You can build a twin size wood bed frame with hand tools in less than two hours for under $100.

Instructions

  1. Outer Frame

    • 1

Measure and mark 10-inches up from the base of each of the four balusters. Measure up along two adjoining edges that will attach to the sides and top or bottom of the bed frame.

    • 2

Measure up and mark 12-inches from the base of each baluster along two side-by-side faces. Measure up 4-inches from the 12-inch marks on each baluster. These marks should be near the center width of the balusters along each side.

    • 3

Place two 36-inch balusters side by side approximately 31-inches apart. Position the balusters so the 10-inch, 12-inch and 16-inch marks are facing inward, toward the opposite baluster, and up toward the ceiling.

    • 4

Place one 31-inch two-by-ten board between the balusters. Line up the bottom edge of the two-by-ten board with the 10-inch marks along the balusters. Place an L-brace at each 12-inch and 16-inch mark. Line one side of the L-brace along the two-by-ten and the opposite end on the baluster. Drive a 4-inch screw through each hole in each L-brace to secure the balusters to the two-by-ten board.

    • 5

Repeat steps three and four with the 48-inch balusters.

    • 6

Place the two 36-inch balusters at one end approximately 67-inches away from the set of 48-inch balusters. The marked edges should be facing the opposite set of balusters. You may need another person to hold one set of balusters.

    • 7

Place one 67-inch two-by-ten board on a flat surface between the two sets of balusters. Line up the bottom edge with the 10-inch mark. Place one L-brace at the12-inch and 16-inch mark at each end of the two-by-ten along the baluster. Drive one 2-inch screw through each hole in each L-brace to secure the baluster to the side of the bed.

    • 8

Repeat Step 6 and Step 7 along the opposite side to create the four sides of the bed frame. Place the outer frame in a standing position.

    Inner Frame

    • 9

Place a 35-inch two-by-ten board on a flat surface. Measure and mark the exact center. This mark will be 17.5-inches from either end.

    • 10

Place one 10-inch two-by-ten board along each center mark. Drive four 4-inch screws from the top edge directly down into the 10-inch section of wood to create a T-shape support.

    • 11

Repeat Step 1 and Step 2 with the remaining 35-inch two-by-ten boards and the remaining 10-inch two-by-ten boards.

    • 12

Measure 20-inches from each set of balusters along the two 67-inch two-by-ten boards. Place one T-structure at each 20-inch mark. Each 35-inch two-by-ten board should fit snugly within the two sides.

    • 13

Place two L-braces along the top edge at each end of the two-by-ten boards and secure them in place with 2-inch screws. Lay a 35-inch by 67-inch piece of plywood over the center boards and rest a box spring and mattress on top.
