How to Make a Wall-Mounted Headboard

A wall-mounted headboard, also called a floating or hanging headboard, is ideal for adding one to a bed without having to attach it to the bed legs. Wall-mounted headboards are also more flexible than other types, allowing you to change headboards easily, and they are simple to make so you can revamp the bed whenever you feel like it.

Instructions

  Measure the width of the bed and decide on the height of the headboard. Standard widths for single beds are 39 inches, doubles are 54 inches, queens 60 inches and kings 76 inches.

  Add about 2 inches to the width of the bed and cut two lengths of 2-by-2 lumber to this measurement. This ensures that the headboard will be the same width as the bed once bedding is put on.

  Cut another two lengths of 2-by-2 lumber to the desired height of the headboard. Trim the ends of all four pieces of lumber to inward-sloping angles of 45 degrees so that the corners mate and form a frame. Secure the ends together with two 2-inch screws driven through each angled corner joint.

  Lay a length of foam batting out onto your work surface and place the frame on top. Draw the batting over one side of the frame and secure it with a staple in the center. Do the same on the opposite side of the frame then on the two remaining sides so that the batting is pinned in place with four staples at the back.

  Continue pulling the batting over the sides, alternating sides as you go to ensure an even pull around the frame. Use hospital corners on each corner to neatly finish attaching the batting. Trim off excess from the back with a pair of scissors.

  Set out the fabric for the headboard with the right side of the fabric face-down; smooth it flat with your hand. Place the frame and batting on top with the batting face-down on the backside of the fabric. Attach the fabric in the same way as the batting.

  Mark a line on the wall at the height you want the headboard to hang; use a level to ensure it is straight. Use a stud finder to mark the position of the studs along this line.

  Cut a length of 2-by-2 lumber about 5 inches shorter than the width of the headboard and position it on the line; this will be a wall cleat, or support plank, for hanging the headboard.

  Secure the cleat to the wall with screws driven through each stud point. Hang the headboard over the cleat on the wall so that the headboard is flat against the wall and centered over the bed.

  Secure the headboard to the cleat with screws driven through the top of the frame of the headboard, at the back, into the wall cleat.
