Length of Mattresses

While bed sizes visibly vary in width, they also vary in length, depending on the exact bed style. Knowing various mattress dimensions allow you to purchase the right bed for your needs and purchase the right sheets to fit it. If you decide to purchase or make a quilt, you will want to know how long the bed is to make it fit comfortably.
  1. Twin

    • A twin mattress is the shortest bed length, measuring only 75 inches long. It is 39 inches wide, providing enough space for a single individual to fit comfortably. In college dormitories you may find XL twin beds that measure 80 inches long instead of 75 to accommodate taller adults.

    Full

    • A full-size bed is the same length as a traditional twin bed, measuring 75 inches long. It is 54 inches wide, providing a single individual with plenty of space to move around. A full-size bed is ideal for a teen or single adult and may even be found in a guest bedroom.

    Queen

    • A queen-size bed measures 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. It provides you with the same length as the XL twin and 30 inches of space for each individual if two people are in bed. It is ideal for two smaller adults, if two people don't mind being close together.

    King

    • A king-size bed is available in two lengths. The traditional king is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, and the California king, which replaces some of the width with length, measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. If you need more space to move around, choose the traditional king-size bed, while the California king is ideal if you are extra tall and don't want your feet to hang off the edge.
