Foam Mattress Vs. Tempur-Pedic

In the 1970s, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) developed a plasmalike, viscous foam material to cushion astronauts during rocket launches. Called "temper foam," or "memory foam," the invention became a household name when a Swedish company developed the Tempur-Pedic foam mattress. A number of smaller companies sprang up to sell their mattresses, as well.
  1. Difference

    • Tempur-Pedic touts their high-density, "revolutionary viscoelastic material" and a commitment to offer the "highest quality in [the] memory foam industry." Other foam mattress manufacturers claim that their products are just as good, using the same 5-lb.-density foam as Tempur-Pedic.

    Cost

    • Tempur-Pedic products are more expensive than the generic, lesser-known brand foam mattresses. Tempur-Pedic aggressively markets their products, requiring them to mark up the prices.

    Considerations

    • The thickness of the foam mattress matters greatly when comparing quality and price. Thicker mattresses provide more comfort and and more durablility, but these mattresses cost much more. When comparing Tempur-Pedic versus other foam mattress brands, consider the thickness as well as the price.

    Fun Facts

    • The Tempur material is viscoelastic; that is, the material is constructed of billions of tiny cells with both liquid and solid properties. The cells in the material shift like liquid to adapt to the contour of the body.
