The Width of Queen and King Size Mattresses

Selecting a mattress requires a choice of cost and mattress size. Selection will also depend on your choice of style and brand since, in most cases, style and brand will have a greater impact on price than size. In most styles, all larger, king-sized options will be close in price, while the smaller, queen size will be less expensive.
  1. Queen

    • Queen sized mattresses are 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. The queen size is 6 inches wider and 6 inches longer that a standard full sized mattress. Queen-sized mattresses are generally cheaper than king sized mattresses of the same style.

    King

    • A standard king-sized mattress is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. The box spring for a king-sized bed usually consists of two Twin XL box springs kept together by the bed frame. A king-sized mattress typically costs about 50 percent more than a queen-sized mattress of the same style. Covers labeled "king-sized" are made to fit this size mattress.

    California King

    • The California king mattress is narrower and longer than a standard king mattress. It measures 72 inches wide and is 84 inches long. The California king is the longer mattress commercially available, so it is particularly suited for taller people. The box spring for this style, like that of a standard king, comes in two halves to make moving easier.

    Split King

    • A split king is a king-sized bed made by combining two twin mattresses. The most commonly available configuration fits standard king size dimensions. The Twin XL mattress is exactly half the width of a standard king and is a common mattress size. Configurations matching the dimensions of a California king are available but more difficult to find. A split king mattress set is much easier to move from one home to another and offers the option of splitting the bed into two singles.
