How to Attach to a Bolt on a Headboard

Headboards that are worn or out of date can be replaced. A bed is actually a collection of several components such as the frame, the foundation -- previously known as the "box spring" -- the mattress, the footboard and headboard. If you are changing out the headboard and need to custom fit it to the existing frame, you'll need to install bolts into the headboard to connect it to the frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure where the retaining bolts will go on the headboard by measuring the existing holes on the frame using a tape measure.

    • 2

Put down a drop cloth and lean the headboard against the wall. Measure and mark where the new bolts will go using a tape measure and pencil.

    • 3

Insert a wood bit into a drill and tighten the chuck to hold the bit firmly in place. Select a wood bit that is the same circumference as the bolts.

    • 4

Drill holes into the headboard where you marked it using the drill and wood bit.

    • 5

Insert the bolts into the newly drilled holes and tighten down with a socket wrench, to thread the holes, then back the bolts out to connect the headboard to the frame.
