How do I Split a Queen Box Spring?

When relocating, it sometimes becomes necessary to force pieces of furniture through doorways. In the case of a queen box spring, it may be necessary to actually split it in two. Otherwise, it may not fit down hallways, around corners, or even through the front door. Luckily, you don't have to be a professional mover or carpenter to get this job done. You can do this with a helper in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Fabric chalk
  • Handsaw
  • Exacto knife or box cutter

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you would like to split or cut the queen box spring by length or width.

    • 2

Find the midway point on the box spring. Measure the length if you plan on cutting it across the width. Measure the width if you plan to cut it across the length. Divide the total measurement of the length or width by two. Mark a line at this point on the underside of the box spring in an unseen area.

    • 3

Cut the dust cloth on the underside of the box spring in the direction in which you plan to split the box spring along the mark you made in the previous step. Repeat this step for the cloth on the top and sides of the box spring.

    • 4

Cut the wood of the box spring along the line of the midway point. Cut all the way through the top, bottom and sides of the boxspring. With a helper, bend the box spring in half. Take care of the springs, which will resist bending. You will have have an evenly split box spring that can fit more easily into tight spaces. Move your box spring to its new location and release the rope.
