Historical Canopy Beds

Originating in the medieval 1500s, the canopy bed has been a familiar sight in bedrooms throughout history. From paltry peasants to prestigious royalty, canopy beds have historically provided sleeping warmth, comfort, privacy and protection. With the passing of time, canopy beds have undergone transformations in style, ornamentation and size. Assorted, historical canopy bed reproductions have been created to accommodate the timeless allure of this beloved bed.
  1. History

    • Conope -- which means bed curtain -- is the medieval French word from which canopy is derived. Many European houses in the 16th century were built with straw-thatched roofs. Animals and bugs thrived atop these roofs for warmth and often fell through, along with dirt, droppings and roof debris. Canopy beds were created to protect sleeping occupants by draping a sheet across tall poles attached to the four corners of the bed. The enclosed bed also offered privacy, safety from mosquitoes and added warmth.

    King Edward I

    • Reigning as king over England during a portion of the 13th century, King Edward I had a canopy bed that traveled with him on his journeys. The rails, posts and chains from which the canopy hung were created for ease in disassembling and transporting the bed wherever the king traveled. The king's royal bed was custom-made to accommodate his tall stature. A feather mattress and green painted poles speckled with decorative stars signified the king's bed.

    Chinese

    • The Chinese canopy bed was common during the historical Ming Dynasty era. Four-post canopy beds were constructed of a structure fitted to the top of the bed. Fabric suited to the season was typically draped around the outside of the bed. Netting or gauze kept bugs away in the summer while allowing cool breezes to blow through the lightweight fabric. Thick cotton or pongee silk encircled the bed during the winter months, keeping heat inside the enclosed bed.

    Reproductions

    • Historical reproductions of ancient canopy beds are skillfully crafted, allowing modern generations to experience and enjoy replicas of antique canopy beds from a distant era. Available in assorted styles, ornately carved woods, optional paint finishes and a variety of sizes, these beds permit a glimpse into the past. Reproductions include canopy beds originally owned by kings, queens, rulers and other well-known historical figures. The romantic, mystical aura surrounding the historical canopy bed makes them an enduring favorite.
