Fitted twin sheets, in general, are the same dimensions as twin mattresses, which are 39 inches wide and 75 inches long; sheets may be slightly larger to take shrinkage into account. However, this measurement includes only the top surface of the sheet and does not take into account the sides of the sheet. Knowing the depth, or thickness, of your mattress is important when purchasing fitted sheets. However, sheet depth is often not listed on packaging. Most fitted sheets are deep enough to fit well on most standard-depth mattresses, which are anywhere from 7 to 13 inches deep. Mattresses from 14 to 21 inches thick are considered deep mattresses, and mattresses more than 22 inches thick are considered extra-deep mattresses. Measure your mattress, read sheet packaging carefully and purchase your sheets accordingly.
Flat sheets, also called top sheets, are typically 66 inches wide and 96 inches long, which gives you plenty of extra fabric to tuck them under your mattress or fold them back at the head of the bed. This measurement may vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer; some manufacturers make them slightly larger if the cloth they use is known to shrink.
When taller teens or adults find a standard twin bed too short for comfort, XL-twin mattresses are the solution. At 39-by-80 inches, an XL-twin mattress, also called an extra-long twin mattress, is the same width as a standard twin but is 5 inches longer. Sheets are proportionately longer as well.
Because they include a flat sheet, fitted sheet, pillowcase, comforter, bed skirt and decorative sham, twin bedding sets are a convenient way to purchase everything you need to dress your bed. You can often find sets at a price that is much lower than it would be to purchase all these items separately. While twin bedding sets may not always include every item listed here, they sometimes include even more, for example a toss pillow or two, or curtain panels.
