Spring Mattresses

• Spring mattresses are the most common type of mattress and are formed by placing foam and cotton padding around a series of springs that provide support while sleeping. The greater the number of springs in the mattress, the more support it provides. Springs are configured differently by manufacturers to provide different amounts of support for sleepers. Over time, spring mattresses lose support due to the weight put upon them. Most spring mattresses need to be replaced every 10 years, although more cheaply made mattresses and those with fewer springs may need to be replaced sooner.

Air Mattresses

• Air mattresses, such as the Select Comfort Sleep Number bed, are considerably more expensive than most standard spring mattresses. These mattresses are composed of inflatable air chambers covered by cotton padding that you can adjust with a remote. Queen and king-sized beds contain two mattresses that are adjusted separately so partners can set each side to a different comfort level. Most air mattress companies offer a 20-year warranty on their product.

Memory Foam Mattresses

• Memory foam mattresses are composed of a thick memory foam that molds to fit the body as it moves and applies pressure to the foam, then returns to its original shape when the pressure is removed. Under the layer of memory foam is a thick layer of heavy foam. Many companies market their own versions of memory foam mattresses and their prices begin at those comparable to traditional spring mattresses. Cheaper memory foam mattresses can absorb heat and lose shape more easily than their more expensive counterparts.

Waterbeds

• Waterbeds are composed of vinyl filled with water. Because of the water contained in the mattress, waterbeds can be heavy and put a strain on floorboards. Water inside the bed is often heated to provide an optimal environment for sleeping. While sleeping, the free movement of the water relieves stress from the spine and shapes to the body. Unlike other mattresses, waterbeds also provide relief for allergy sufferers because the cover for the mattress can be washed and the vinyl wiped clean so dust mites are not absorbed.
